BetMGM Makes Initial Foray Into Texas With Astros Partnership

Houston, we have a sports betting partner.

The Houston Astros, currently second in the American League West, struck a deal with BetMGM to become the major league club’s official sports betting and iGaming partner.

The deal gives BetMGM signage in and around Minute Maid Park, including promotional opportunities on the rotating marquee behind home plate and a permanent outfield wall sign.

The fact that Texas sports betting is at least two years away from legalization didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for the deal.

“The Houston Astros are a monumental addition to our portfolio of strategic partnerships with professional sports teams across the U.S.,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt in a press release.

“The organization’s passionate fan base will be key to the growth of BetMGM throughout the South as we look for new ways to engage fans with unique experiences that go beyond the game.”

A deal for Astros fans and Texas neighbors

BetMGM promises that Astros fans will get exclusive VIP perks connected to being a customer, including the opportunity to toss a ceremonial first pitch at a home game, on-field access to watch batting practice, and deals on travel for road games.

The Astros and BetMGM will also offer special promotions tied to the major league club for fans in Louisiana, where sports betting is legal.

“We are looking forward to our partnership with BetMGM,” said Giles Kibbe, senior vice president and general counsel for the Astros.

“As we continue to strive for new ways to add the fan experience, this partnership will provide another way for the Astros to engage with our fans.”

The Astros will be the fourth MLB team to partner with BetMGM. The Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Washington Nationals also have deals with the casino giant.

Deep in the heart of Texas

Sports betting has become a topic of late in the Lone Star State. Beto O’Rourke, the current Democratic nominee for Governor, said he would support the activity, and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is also reportedly on board.

However, the Texas legislature only meets in odd-numbered years and couldn’t bring about sports betting until the next session in 2023.

The Astros are coming off a 7-0 homestand at Minute Maid Park and are a half-game behind the Anaheim Angels in the AL West standings. Houston has reached the World Series four times (2005, 2017, 2019, and 2021), winning the title in 2017.

This partnership marks BetMGM’s first Texas connection.
